AMEN perform tonight

on the HENRY ROLLINS show!!!

**UPDATE!** Just found this on youtube.com! This is the performance that AMEN did on the Henry Rollins show last night. Recommended!!!

Be sure to tune into the Henry Rollins show tonight (Friday the 13th!) at 8pm/11pm eastern on the IFC channel as AMEN make their American television debut!!! (And check out below a killer compilation of some of AMEN's best DEATHPUNk noise!)

These L.A. metallic punks were handpicked by the Sex Pistols to open for their reunion tour and Iggy Pop was to mix their first album. Singer Casey Chaos sang with the Damned's Rat Scabies and Brian James last year at the infamous 100 club for the 30th anniversary of the Damned's infamous debut album. This was reportedly recorded for a live CD and DVD for all those who couldn't make the event. A long way from his beginnings in Florida's 80's hardcore act, Disorderly Conduct. In 2005, Casey also reformed 3/4 of the original Emperor along with a couple members of Turbonegro. They made/released a record under the moniker, "SCUM" called "Gospels For The Sick."

AMEN are one of those bands that never had any commercial success, but were able to put out incredible non-commercial records through 3 major labels. Paul Raven (of Killing Joke fame and Neon Hearts, now in Ministry) is the man who found this band and produced their first album that was never released. At that time AMEN was just kicking around and getting banned from all the L.A. pubs.

Needless to say, this band truly has a sound of its own and doesn't mimic all the retro '77 wanna-be bands that play 3 chord wanna-be punk rock. TV Smith from the Adverts has even toured with AMEN and recorded a BBC session with them. And Gaye Advert is their number 1 fan!

Their sound is a mixture of punk, rock 'n' roll and metallic fury. As the Stooges were originally described in their Rolling Stone review as "metallic punks," the same could be said for AMEN. You may not think they're the best band in the world, but they're definitely a band that everyone from the Damned, the Sex Pistols, the Adverts and Rollins himself, all tip their hat to and have worked with them in one way or another. Rikk Agnew also did a stint in AMEN and still has the AMEN tattoo to prove it! Even Rat Scabies would quote AMEN as being "The punkiest, heaviest thing out of America since The MC5." Paul Raven also went on record saying, "Casey is a human bomb!" And Henry Rollins wrote in his recent book Fanatic "If there was any band I could be in, it would be AMEN."

Once again, check out AMEN on the Henry Rollins show that airs tonight (Friday the 13th!) 8pm/11pm Eastern, on the IFC channel. You might recognize guitarist Ken Decter from Florida's seminole hardcore act "F" (of Killed By Death infamy), who also played in Disorderly Conduct with Casey. They also performed an exclusive song for www.ifc.com called "Another Planet" you can see that here:

There's also an exclusive interview with Casey Chaos of AMEN (There's some cool old school pics of Black Flag that they flash during the interview) , you can see that here:

F.U.'s "My America"

Classic Boston hardcore album! As good as it gets.

Also check out, "Kill For Christ" and for that matter, anything the F.U.'s did up until they turned into the punk influenced rock band, Straw Dogs. F.U.'s material is all classic stuff to me for the American hardcore era.

Second Wind "Security"

If you like Minor Threat's last effort, then Second Wind is the closest thing to it. Sharing Minor Threat/Meatmen ex-bass player, this outfit put out this lost gem of an album. It should be a crime that it hasn't been re-released and available to the masses.

Straight out of Washington DC/Virginia, hardcore manual 101.

PEACE/WAR Compilation

I'll never forget as a kid buying this vinyl goldmine of bands. It came with the ultimate little fanzine like booklet. A page for each band to do as they please. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner and I can't scan, but if I had one I would love to include the booklet cause I think it's an important part of the whole package.

This is the CD version of the vinyl release, so it has bonus tracks, making it a whopping 60 songs!!!!

Yes, this has it all. Articles of Faith, G.I.S.M., Neon Christ...all on the first 3 tracks!!! Ending with UK Subs, Reagan Youth and Mob 47. If you can find the CD, you can't go wrong!!!

Amebix "Arise!"

Amebix. What can you say about this band that you've not heard before. As usual, I don't like to impose my personal outlook on albums or people's music pertaining to this blog. I think it's up to the listener to decide and do what I did when I was a kid. Research the band and find out what you need to know. If you know and don't have this album, you can get it here. If you don't know and don't have this album, you can get it here. Buy their CD, support the great label that released this and listen to the band that thousands of bands were influenced by.

CRIME

"Piss On Your Turntable..."

Only 500 in existence.

Any collector can look for this on the Lady Butcher label out of San Francisco. Since this release they've released an essential CD on Swamii which is a mandatory buy! Too much to write about and I could never do this band justice. If you don't know about CRIME, then do the time...and search the internet.

They're a fantastic band from San Fransisco that never got paid their dues. They incorporated an incredibly impactful combination of music and artwork to deliver an unparalleled comparison to any other band. True originators and truly mandatory!! With songs like "Heartwire My Heart", "Piss on your dog", "Frustration", "Flyeater" and of course "San Francisco's Doomed" you can't go wrong!! Everyone should check this out because it's here, and you got nothing to lose!

Tracks 1 & 2: First 45 released in '76
Tracks 3 & 4: Secons 45 released in '77
Tracks 5-24: San Francisco's Doomed LP released in '90
Tracks 25-27: First Blood 45 recorded '78
Tracks 28 & 29: Third 45 released '80

Punishment Of Luxury "Laughing Academy"

This was recorded in 1979, except for the last 3 tracks. This post-punk band was often described as a cross between Roxy Music, XTC and Killing Joke and I think a bit of the Kravats. But maybe that's subliminal because the instant classic "Puppet life" came out on the great Small Wonder label. Probably not the first band that comes to mind but another treasure in punk rock history!
