Punk Territory Vol. 7

Italian Hardcore 1983-85

RAW POWER (Tracks 1-3)

Formed at the beginning of 1982 when OFF LIMITS split up and in '83 produced a s/t cassette with 19 really sharp tracks, three of which are reproduced here. Originality is their strongest feature, as is obvious from the tracks chosen here.

THE WOPS (Tracks 4-7)

The Wops strike again with these 4 songs, half of their first and only cassette.

CRASH BOX (Tracks 8-11)

Their style could be described as influenced by the very best American hardcore, popular at the time, but enlivened with original and clever ideas and experimentation.

THE CLASS WAR (Tracks 12-14)

THE SKULLS (Tracks 15-16)

These 2 Sicilian groups represented a sense of passionate committment straight from the heart. What you will hear in these tracks is still pure Punk, though fairly restrained, with lyrics based on the experiences of life.

CRAPPING DOGS (Tracks 17-23)

Their stance was firmly libertarian, against all forms of militarism and they especially wanted to be uninfluenced by any kind of ideology from either inside or outside of the Punk movement. Their musical influences are quite clear in these tracks: form HC to classic Punk, from Reggae to New Wave.

RIOT (Track 24)

LIBERATION LIFE (Track 25)

UART PUNK (Track 26)

The tracks by these 3 groups all have an anti-war theme. Riot remained almost completely unknown, Liberation Life made a demo-tape with seven tracks while Uart Punk, formed in '81, not only made the usual cassette, but also took part in the "...first real collective recorded document representing Italian Punk..."

50 Braccio (Track 27)

Their style was HC and hardly any changes of beat, but they were extremely well arranged, and considerable importance was given to the lyrics.

KOLLETTIVO (Tracks 28-30)

This is one of the most famous bands from Turin, although the recording is not very good, the words of the songs are excellent.

BLAXFEMA (Tracks 31-34)

This band is from Lombardy, and at the time some considered them to be one of the best groups to be found on the scene in Italy.

NOISENOISENOISE pn (Tracks 35-38)

They invented a rather unusual kind of punk, based on strident, though never cacophonous or unpleasant, guitar mixes. They were in fact a group with a creative and intelligent style who were never banal or insincere.

STAZIONE SUICIDA (Track 39)

Full of violence and anger, this is one of the best songs from the self-produced cassette by this frenzied group.

Iggy Pop "Brick By Brick/Butt Town Acoustic Demos"

For the softer side of the beast, that is the Ig-man. This CD never came out officially but was used as a promotional item via Virgin Records. This was recorded during the Brick By Brick era and pressed in 1990, this CD had no front cover, only a back cover of a black and white photo xeroxed of Iggy screaming, holding his head and shrunken into a shopping cart. I've never seen this on any blogs so I hope you enjoy!!!

Empire "Expensive Sound"

1981 Classic LP + Material Never Before Released

Ever wonder what happened to the legendary Derwood and Mark Laff of Generation X? Well, this CD tells a story, and what is in my opinion a truly original album that combined magnificent post punk sound of obscure metallic punk rock riffs, and at the same time reminiscent of Public Image 2nd edition. Maybe I just think that for personal reasons, I don't know. But I will say that this album has garnished them some die hard fans liek duane Peters, who eve n covered "Hot Seat." And Henry Rollins as well as the Washington D.C. band Embrace. The dynamic duo of Generation X played an incredible mix of emotional, metallic, high intensity punk/rock/metal/original wall of sound. Unlike any album before or even after it's release, and maybe that's why I feel the P.I.L. reference comes into play. Anyway, check it out and buy it if you can get a copy. Anybody into honest music, take note.

GAUZE:

Like most Japanese bands they have great lyrical content and lines, like on "Love Song" - "Non control my penis."
Gauze is just classic Japanese punk like GISM, and if you like GISM and Lip Cream, I think you will like Gauze. I highly recommend this album as well as:

THE SEXUAL "Complete Discography 83-85"

Tracks 1-4 taken from 1st flexi disc called 'Suicide"
Tracks 5-9 taken from 2nd flexi "The Last Days"
Tracks 10 + 11 taken from compilation, which also featured Confuse, called "M78." Released '85.
Tracks 12-15 unreleased studio recordings, recorded in 8/23/1983.
Tracks 16+ 17 unreleased live recordings. (9/11/1983)

My scanner is broken, and could not find a single thing to do with The Sexual online, so sorry for the missing cover! I will try to put it up once I can afford a new scanner. Regardless, the music still stands on it's own and is a must have for any Jap Punk enthusiast. Get it while you can, as it is unknown how long this album will stay online.

The Wasps "Punkryonics"

In 1976, Johnny Rich, Steve Wollaston and Dell May, all from East London, met singer/songwriter Jesse Lynn-Dean from Islington. And thus The Wasps began. One of the bands that was immortalized on the "Live At The Vortex" album, along with other greats like the Maniacs, Art Attacks, etc... They became one of the many bands that were a part of the England's punk explosion. This CD was released on Overground Records and compiled tracks from "Teenage Treats," "Live @The Vortex" track, and other sources. Like many other Overground Record re-issues, it is a wise investment, in my opinion. I think the cover of the CD says it all!

The MAD "We Love Noize"

Yet another CD I have never seen in stores. Lucky for me, Screaming Mad George is a very good friend and gave me this copy of the CD. It is the ultimate in every sense. What more can you say except, "I hate music!" George is now a special effects designer for movies and film and in typical MAD fashion. The only shame with this band is that they didn't go on to make more music, I think we can all agree upon that. The MAD were in a world of their own, and their sound drags you through the gutters of New York City. I saw this on some website for $150 or something ridiculous, no one should have to pay that much money for a CD. Especially one so important and overlooked. I hope you like this one as much as I do!

Not So Quiet On The Western Front - Compilation

What could be said about this compilation other than Maximum Rock N Roll really set the standard with this one, and jumpstarted a lot of bands careers. Aside from that this was a request and we always do our best to plunge into the vaults for a fellow comrade in need of true music. Now if anyone out there has a copy of the "BONELESS ONES" album ("Skate For The Devil") that would be much appreciated, to buy or download. Just been trying to track down that album for ages! The Swanky's "The Very Best of Hero"

(RE-MASTER) Japan 1985

When I was a kid I remember listening to this album so much, I think the grooves wore out in the first week! Up until recently, I had the honor of going back to Japan and some locals took me to all the amazing record stores and I stumbled across this album, remastered on CD. Atleast, remastered to the version that I had originally back in the day. Japan had some of the best music ever, and I would think that this would undoubtedly be at the top of any punk's list. Listen and see and buy if you can!
